Introduction to yoga using a chair for over 60's。This is a brief introduction to using yoga in your life when over 60 for deriving health benefits。 It explains the relevance of yoga for this age group as a gentle way of promoting strength and stability as well as flexibility。 The importance of breathing is explained together with several practical exercises。 Warming down as well as warming up before a session is also advocated。 Different regions of the body get their own set of exercises。 Most o Introduction to yoga using a chair for over 60's。This is a brief introduction to using yoga in your life when over 60 for deriving health benefits。 It explains the relevance of yoga for this age group as a gentle way of promoting strength and stability as well as flexibility。 The importance of breathing is explained together with several practical exercises。 Warming down as well as warming up before a session is also advocated。 Different regions of the body get their own set of exercises。 Most of the exercises are done seated, but some involve standing and using the chair for support。I suspect many of the pages have been copied from elsewhere as all the black and white illustrations inside are of a young woman (mostly) or a young man (occasionally) despite the cover showing an age appropriate person。 I think his is demoralising for an over 60 audience。Another problem in the book construction is that although several poses (like cactus flower and seated goddess) get their own description and title, the seated mountain pose at the beginning of several subsequent exercises does not。 A brief description, which is not highlighted, is mentioned in one of the foot exercises。 This reliance on referring back to an earlier instruction denies the reader the ability to see the exercises as recipe items and to pick and mix according to their taste in combining elements。 This principle is also contradicted by the sections at the end on combining exercises for stability and flexibility。 This is very prescriptive, written as dense text with little or no indication of the duration of elements or overall and is, I found, difficult to memorise and implement in current format。This sloppiness is also evident in editing mistakes。 An example is using the word causation where I believe he meant caution。 My word of caution is that you will have to work hard to get the good bits out of this book。I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review。 。。。more
Emily Pennington,
Hey, Even I Can Do It !! 。 。 。Don’t put a hard and fast age number on your exercise -- it’s good and healthy at any age。 Choosing a book like this geared to the older body is excellent whether you truly are in that age group or younger。 If you have mild limitations, this is also a good choice after you pass it by your doctor。 What I am getting at is that the activities are perfect for keeping yourself healthy while not being wildly energetic and exhausting if you are not a “spring chicken”。 The Hey, Even I Can Do It !! 。 。 。Don’t put a hard and fast age number on your exercise -- it’s good and healthy at any age。 Choosing a book like this geared to the older body is excellent whether you truly are in that age group or younger。 If you have mild limitations, this is also a good choice after you pass it by your doctor。 What I am getting at is that the activities are perfect for keeping yourself healthy while not being wildly energetic and exhausting if you are not a “spring chicken”。 The best part of chair yoga is that you don’t have to worry about joints giving out or maybe irritating a slight sprain you don’t want to overwork。 Yet you will still get the benefit of well thought out exercise。 The author also shares great information (I’m one of those who always wants to know “Why?”) and so she tells you how to do something, why you do it that way, and what you can expect。 This book is easy to read and understand, the instructions are step-by-step, and there are simple drawings to show you what you are aiming to do。 Give it a try and see how easy it is。 Exercise can make you feel good about yourself and is definitely worth investing your future in it。 Make it a habit and you won’t have to think twice。 And if you can call in some friends to exercise along with you, it can actually be fun!I really like this author because I feel like she sincerely cares about her readers and the exercise she recommends。 This is not the first book of hers that I have read, but I trust the information she puts in her books。 And remember, if you have any concerns, your doctor is your primary source to answer your questions before you begin。 。。。more
Judith,
Worth reading 4*This book is well worth reading and also trying the exercises。 There are some useful diagrams to show how to do the movements, although, towards the end, there are no more diagrams although the description is adequate。 There are good stretching sequences described which are important first steps in order to progress to a better level of fitness。 I am happy to recommend this book。I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review。
